The Choice is Yours

San Diego Health Connect offers many benefits to patients, but your participation is voluntary — you get to choose whether you want your information included. If your care providers participate in your local Health Information Exchange (HIE), they’re required to notify you of their participation. When you visit a participating provider, you’ll receive a notice regarding their participation in the health information exchange, which may accompany the provider’s HIPAA privacy notification.

How Consent Works

By default, patients are automatically "opted-in" for data sharing between their San Diego Health Connect providers.  Data is only shared/viewed by your treating providers for accepted purposes such as treatment, payment or operations.   The San Diego Health Connect consent model opts patients in for our entire network.  If a patient opts-out, sharing will not take place among ANY of your San Diego Health Providers EXCEPT in cases of a life-threating emergency.

Keep in mind that that are multiple HIE organizations in California.  Opting in or out with San Diego Health Connect will not affect data sharing with other HIEs at this time. There currently is no statewide consent offered.

You Can Decide

You can decide whether your health information is shared through the health information exchange. You can elect not to share your health information – this is called “opting out.” Should you wish to not share your medical information with the HIE, you can opt out through San Diego Health Connect. By making this choice, your medical information will not be accessible to providers who use the HIE tools.
